Are “wellness dates” the new candlelit dinner?

by The HUD App Team

Is your idea of romance more hiking boots than high heels? Yoga mat over martini glass? You may be ready to embrace the era of wellness dates. If you’re over the usual “Grab a drink?” routine, you’re not alone. More singles are swapping cocktails for kombucha, and let’s be honest, sometimes a walk in nature is just what your nervous system (and your banter) needs.

Why go on a wellness date?

These dates come with all the fun and butterflies of a classic meet-up, but with the bonus of endorphins and maybe a few laughs over your downward dog technique. There are no awkward pauses while you both try to remember which one is Ant-Man. Instead, you get real conversation and shared experiences. If the date is a flop, at least you clocked up your daily steps.

So what’s there to do?

Does it get your heart rate up? Do you feel the breeze on your face? Is it an activity you can humblebrag to your friends about later? Hiking, yoga, and meditation in the park are all valid options, as are visiting a farmers’ market, whitewater rafting, and even going to a dance cardio class. But why not try some of these more out-of-the-ordinary ideas…

Goat yoga: Strike a pose while friendly goats wander around (and maybe on) you. Nothing breaks the ice like giggling together as a goat tries to eat your hair.

Forest bathing: Head to the nearest park or bush walk and practice “shinrin-yoku” – slow, mindful wandering among the trees. No actual bathing suits required.

Painting with puppies: Local shelters and rescues sometimes run art sessions where you can cuddle puppies while you paint.

Silent disco walks: Plug in your headphones, join a silent disco group, and groove down city streets together. Nobody else will hear your questionable song choices.

Sunrise beach meditation: Start the day with guided meditation or gentle stretches on the sand as the sun comes up.

Ice bath challenge: Dip into a chilly plunge pool together for a rush of endorphins and the right to say, “We survived!”

Sound bathing: Experience a meditative sound bath together. Lie back as gongs, chimes, or singing bowls wash away your stress.

Outdoor Tai Chi or Qigong: Find a community class in a park and channel your inner martial artist.

Botanical garden picnic and mindful colouring: Pack healthy snacks and bring colouring books or sketchpads for some zen creativity among the blooms.

Float tank experience: Book a session at a floatation centre. Compare notes afterwards on whether you reached enlightenment or just took the best nap ever.

Climbing gym adventure: Tackle an indoor climbing wall together, then toast your bravery with green juice.

Aerial yoga: Swing, stretch, and occasionally tangle yourselves in big silky hammocks. At worst, you’ll have funny stories. At best, you’ll feel like circus pros.

Urban herb hunt: Do a foraging walk with a local expert, then make herbal tea together from your finds.

Wellness workshop: Try couples’ pottery, smoothie-making, crafting your own cologne, or a candle-pouring workshop.

Charity 5K or Fun Run: Sign up for a themed fun run – bonus if costumes are involved. It’s for a good cause, and you’ll get to laugh at each other’s running style.

Laughter Yoga: Take a class where the goal is simply to laugh. Yes, it’s a thing, and yes, it’s delightfully awkward.

More than just a date

Wellness dates are really personality quizzes in disguise. You quickly see how your date handles teamwork, like navigating a muddy slope or making kale chips edible. Are they playful and willing to try new things, or do they grumble when faced with something outside their comfort zone? Activities like yoga or hiking make everyone a bit more vulnerable, and seeing each other in a less-than-perfect moment is refreshingly real. You also get a sense of their values, whether they care about self-care, nature, or rescuing a lost hedgehog you find on the trail.

When things go awry…

But what happens when your partner bails on a wellness date or things go sideways? Sometimes the weather turns, someone “forgets” their running shoes, or the only thing flowing is the sweat down your face as you attempt hot yoga for the first time.

If your date flakes, don’t take it personally. Wellness dates can be intimidating, and not everyone is ready for mud on their shoes or accidental downward-facing-farts. If your plans fall apart, you can always turn it into a solo adventure, invite a friend, or reschedule for something lower key.

Laughter really is the best backup plan, so roll with it and remember that not every date needs to be a storybook success. The best connections happen when you let go of perfect and embrace the unpredictable. Whether you end up with a new crush, a new friend, or just a new appreciation for green smoothies, a wellness date is never a wasted day.
