Sex & cannabis: How weed can elevate your pleasure

by Danielle Simpson-Baker (aka The Sexpot Therapist)

We know, we know, sex is already great. But add a little cannabis into the mix? You might just unlock a whole new level of pleasure, connection, and body awareness.

The relationship between weed and sex isn’t just stoner fantasy; it’s backed by science, personal anecdotes, and centuries of history. Ancient civilizations used cannabis as an aphrodisiac, and modern research suggests it can enhance sensation, reduce inhibitions, and help people feel more present in their bodies. So, whether you’re looking to spice up your solo sessions or take partnered play to new heights, here’s how cannabis can take your pleasure to the next level.

Heightened sensation = more intense orgasms

One of the biggest reasons cannabis and sex go hand in hand? Sensory enhancement. THC interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, amplifying touch, taste, and sound. That means every kiss, caress, and stroke can feel deeper, richer, and more electric. Many people report longer, more intense orgasms when high (and who doesn’t want that?).

For example, strain options like Blue Dream (a hybrid with a balance of THC and CBD) are often reported to provide a euphoric, uplifting high that sharpens sensory perception. This can heighten the tactile pleasure of skin-to-skin contact, making every touch feel even more satisfying. On the other hand, strains like OG Kush (indica-dominant) can create a deeply relaxing, body-centered experience, where the entire body feels more receptive to sensation, potentially leading to those longer, more satisfying climaxes.

Eases anxiety and inhibitions

Ever been in your head during sex? Overthinking your body, the way you sound, or if you’re “doing it right”? Cannabis can help quiet that inner critic, allowing you to sink into the moment and enjoy pleasure without performance anxiety. Strains with a balanced THC-to-CBD ratio can be particularly helpful for reducing stress while still keeping you present and aroused.

A great strain for this is Harlequin, a high-CBD strain that’s known for its calming and anxiety-reducing effects without causing heavy sedation. Perfect for those who want to maintain focus and stay in the moment without feeling overly stoned. Additionally, you might want to try cannabis-infused lubes like Foria Awaken or Quim Rock, which combine CBD and THC to relax the body and reduce tension, especially in the pelvic region. These products enhance sensation while promoting a deep sense of relaxation and comfort.

Increases blood flow (yes, down there, too)

THC is a vasodilator, meaning it increases blood flow throughout the body, including to your genitals. That can lead to stronger erections, increased vaginal lubrication, and enhanced clitoral sensitivity. If you’ve ever wanted to feel everything just a little more, cannabis might be your best friend.

Strains like Pineapple Express (a sativa-dominant hybrid) are known for promoting a euphoric buzz that can leave you feeling energized and ready to explore new sensations. Meanwhile, products like CBDistillery's CBD Gel Capsules can improve circulation and provide that extra boost of sensitivity without getting you too high, making it a great option for people who want the benefits of cannabis without the psychoactive effects.

Boosts desire and libido

Cannabis and sex research is still evolving, but studies suggest that moderate cannabis use is linked to increased sexual frequency and desire. While not everyone experiences this, many people find that cannabis helps them tap into their erotic energy, making them more open to connection and intimacy.

Consider trying strains like Strawberry Cough (a sativa strain) for increased mental clarity and arousal or Granddaddy Purple (indica) for a more laid-back, intimate connection. These strains can help boost libido by calming the mind, reducing external stress, and enhancing body awareness, which can make connecting with a partner feel more natural and exciting.

Enhances full-body orgasms and edging

Because cannabis slows down time perception and enhances body awareness, it can make orgasms feel more prolonged and expansive. Some people even report experiencing full-body orgasms that feel like rolling waves of pleasure rather than quick bursts. If you practice edging (delaying orgasm to build intensity), cannabis can make the buildup feel even more delicious.

Using products like Miss Grass’s THC-infused bath salts can also help create an immersive experience by relaxing your body and enhancing the pleasure of touch during sex. The longer you draw out the experience, the more heightened your awareness becomes, leading to those delicious, extended orgasms. Combining this with an indica strain like Northern Lights can encourage deep relaxation and increase sensations during orgasm, potentially making every release feel more powerful.

How to use cannabis for better sex

Choose the right strain

Strains high in limonene (like some sativas) can boost energy and arousal, while those with myrcene (often found in indicas) can deepen relaxation. Experiment to see what works for your body. For instance, if you’re looking for a more energetic, arousing effect, go for strains like Jack Herer or Super Lemon Haze. If you’re after relaxation and a more body-centric high, try strains like Granddaddy Purple or Bubba Kush.

Try infused lubes and oils

THC-infused lubes increase blood flow and sensitivity without getting you high, making them a game-changer for foreplay. Brands like Foria or Quim Rock offer products that pair the benefits of THC with natural ingredients like coconut oil, creating a sensual glide while stimulating intimate areas for heightened pleasure.

Start low, go slow

Too much THC can cause couch-lock or anxiety - not exactly the vibe you want. Microdosing or using CBD-balanced products can keep things pleasurable without overwhelming your senses. Consider products with a lower THC percentage or balanced THC-to-CBD ratios to begin with, such as Kiva’s Terra Bites (a low-dose edible) or Mary’s Medicinals CBD patches, which offer a slow, steady effect without going overboard.

Set the mood

Cannabis can make sex more immersive, so enhance the experience with soft lighting, sensual music, and textures that beg to be touched. Whether you’re lighting candles, playing smooth music, or using silky sheets, cannabis will help amplify the sensations of being in your body and in the moment.

At the end of the day, cannabis and sex are about the same thing: Pleasure, presence, and deep connection. So whether you’re rolling one up before rolling in the sheets or just adding a little THC lube to your routine, let weed be your guide to mind-blowing intimacy.
